The Inertia

Today, Carissa Moore won her first ever Rip Curl Pro Bells Beach over Tyler Wright in an amazing demonstration of progressive female surfing. In what proved to be a mostly wave starved 35 minutes, Moore dominated with a 9.57 early on to lead for most of the heat.

Wright had a rough start, missing her first wave and falling early on her second, leaving the door open for Moore to find the backup score she needed to seal the win. Despite an excellent run that saw her ousting Steph Gilmore and Courtney Conlogue, Wright was unable to string together two high scoring waves in the final.

“Unfortunately, there weren’t that many waves; she [Tyler Wright] was surfing amazing,” said Moore. “It was a little nerve wracking.”

With this win, Carissa Moore takes the lead in the World Title Race. “I’m super stoked. I have such a great support team; I feel really blessed,” said Moore. “I’ve always wanted to win here.”

Up next for the women will be the Dow AgroSciences Pro in Taranaki, New Zealand, which represents the mid-point of the women’s tour.

The Rip Curl Pro Bells Beach is expected to crown a men’s champion tomorrow afternoon, weather permitting.
