The Inertia

Carissa Moore recently made a big decision: she’s taking the 2020 CT season off. She broke the news in a lengthy Instagram post. “I wanted to personally share with you that I have decided to take a break from competing on the championship tour in 2020,” she wrote. “This is something that I have given a lot of thought.”

Her decision comes after an incredibly dominant season that netted her a fourth world title. She’s only the sixth woman to have four titles. She’s been surfing on tour for a long time now, and she wants to hit pause. “If I learned anything about myself the past few years,” she continued, “it’s that I am a 100 percent all-in person. I have dedicated the last ten years of my life to competing at the highest level and want to continue to do that well into my thirties. I realize how fortunate I am to do something I love every day and as a career. This break is a press refresh so that I can come back to the tour happier and more excited than ever in 2021.”

When Lakey Peterson dropped out of the Maui Pro, Moore’s slot into the 2020 Olympics was solidified, so her announcement naturally had more than a few people wondering whether it meant she would skip the Games. Thankfully, she won’t be.

She went on to explain what she’s got planned for the year: “With this time off, I want to expand my @moorealoha programs, work on a film project, go on some fun surf trips, improve my surfing and do things I haven’t had the chance to.”
