The Inertia

On Sunday morning, Venice pier surfers arrived to find an entire car being dragged off of the beach. The night before, the driver was arrested after going on a high speed pursuit through Los Angeles that eventually ended in the water.

California Highway Patrol started to pursue the silver BMW  late Saturday night, after it was wanted for speeding, reports NBC News. From there, the driver entered West Los Angeles at speeds of approximately 85 miles per hour, then exited at Jefferson Boulevard and continued through several city streets at speeds between 35-65 miles per hour.

The chase ended in Venice beach, where the driver drove through a parking lot, onto the sand, and into the water. It was at that point that the LA County lifeguards got the call.

“Over the weekend, LA County Lifeguards and LA County Sheriff’s Department responded to a vehicle that had driven into the ocean just south of the Venice Pier following a high-speed pursuit originating in Temple City,” wrote the LA County Lifeguards on Instagram. “Once the car began to submerge, the driver escaped the vehicle and swam towards the end of the pier, where they were ultimately detained by LA County Sheriff’s Department. LA County Lifeguards searched the vehicle for additional occupants and found two dogs were left inside the vehicle, lifeguards rescued and return them to shore. While the mission of the Department has always been to protect life, property, and the environment, this time life took the form of two Boston Terriers. Thankfully, everyone is safe, and the vehicle has since been removed from the water with minimal environmental impacts.”
