The Inertia

Capitulo Perfeito just got the green light. The annual Portuguese tube riding competition has a three-month-long waiting period, during which the organizers make the call to run on the absolute best day of the winter. According to a press release from the event, competition organizers have deemed that day will be this Saturday.

The announcement triggers a mad dash to get to Carcavelos Beach in Cascais, Portugal, in time for the 7 a.m. first official call. During that time, an oncoming storm is stirring up powerful eight-foot sets, combined with light-to-moderate offshore winds, which will create the ideal conditions for tube-riding.

The (nearly) full list of competitors includes Aritz Aranburu, Balaram Stack, Bruno Santos, Clay Marzo, Craig Anderson, João Guedes, João Maria Mendonça, Miguel Blanco, Nic von Rupp, Noa Deane, Noah Beschen, Pedro Boonman, Rob Machado, Santiago Graça, and Tiago Stock. However, there is still one final entrant to be included – a mystery wildcard who will be appointed in the next 48 hours by event organizers.

Up for grabs is a €50,000 cash prize, along with a €2,500 bonus for the best tube. Additionally, the Ricardo dos Santos Special Trophy will be awarded to the most committed surfer.

A women’s side event will also take place that same weekend. The “Special Women Heat,” as it has been dubbed, will take place in between the semis and final. The heat will feature Francisca Veselko, Yolanda Hopkins, Mafalda Lopes and Camila Cardoso. The winner will be awarded a 10-day stay in the Mentawais.

The entire event will be streamed live here.
