Everybody loves to tout the quality of waves in their hometown. It’s a thing we are all guilty of no matter how irrational the claim may actually be. But do you know who doesn’t have to embelish their “back home” stories? The folks groomed on the shores of Cape Town.
You’re forgiven if Jeffreys Bay are the first two words that pop into your mind when thinknig of things related to world class waves and South Africa, but a couple hours worth of flying to the east there is a wild variety of waves that could persuade even the most staunch regular foot take a slight detour. Cape Town seemingly never shuts off. Winter months are pounded with swell and summer months are somehow still graced with the kind of conditions made for magazine cover shots.
“In the summertime, all the southeast winds end up blowing all the sand into all the little nooks and crannies,” Jordy Smith says. “And on the Cape peninsula, basically you can get an offshore condition somewhere almost every single day…It’s really one of the best places in the world to be a surfer.”
If variety is your preference, Cape Town was probably your home in a past life. Or if you’re lucky, it’s your home now.
