The Inertia

I moved across the Atlantic from Cornwall in the UK to Nova Scotia, Canada’s Atlantic in 2008. The new coastline has been a constant draw for me and my camera since day one. With a background in fine art and having surfed for a couple of decades, the stunning Nova Scotian coastline and its wild, rugged and often brutally cold surroundings came together as perfect subject matter for producing artwork. The best way I can find to capture my new surroundings is to go wide-angle with my shots to squeeze as much of that ambience into each frame. My surfscapes are rarely captured by anything other than a 10-20mm lens in an attempt to draw the viewer in to seeing what I’m seeing first hand. I want to stir something inside someone who surfs and allow them to lose themselves in that moment, be it the stark coldness, the sunset or the reeling waves on the point.

In the digital era, my goal is to make art and make prints. Getting my work on people’s walls and making something that lasts longer than a few seconds on someone’s screen. It’s the biggest draw for me as an artist and photographer, and seeing that work hung up and looking good is what it’s all about.
