The Inertia

When Uluwatu gets big, it’s not a place for the faint of heart. The Bombie hurls itself towards the inside section, getting steeper as it goes. With a step-up, surfers can get in early, have time for a few huge, gouging turns, then set their line and wait for a cover up. And when the stars align, it’ll be one of the best waves you’ll ever catch. Case in point: the wave you see here.

It was a few months ago, during a run of swell that hit Indonesia hard. The waves were pumping for what felt like forever, and thanks to the pandemic, usually-clogged lineups were empty. Bruno Santos was there to partake, and when he stroked into a big one from the Bombie, he probably had an inkling that it was going to be a good one. But judging from the crowd’s reaction, they weren’t expecting it to be THIS good.
