Most 13 year olds haven’t generally had enough time to master anything. Sure, they may be getting the hang of something, but when it comes to surfing, there are only a handful of 13 year olds that can hang at a wave like The Box. Brody Mulik is one of them.
The Box is one of Western Australia’s most famous waves. The notorious slab is a stone’s throw from Margaret River, and it’s a relatively fickle place. When it’s on, though, it is really on. It’s not a wave for the inexperienced. Positioning is key, as is confidence, and it requires an ability to throw caution to the wind. The wave is short, fast, and punchy, and anyone who has surfed it will tell you there’s not another spot quite like it.
Mulik is quickly making a name for himself as a grom to watch. Western Australia, much like the North Shore, breeds a certain type of surfer: one who thrives when the waves get hairy. And that, it appears, is a description that fits the young Mulik to a tee.
