Huntington Beach, nicknamed “Surf City,” is one of the most well-known places in all of surfing. And its centerpiece pier is the iconic surf spot most of the world associates with the city itself. It’s hosted the OP Pro and the US Open of Surfing through the decades, it’s seen hundreds of thousands of surf fans flock to the sand nearby during contests, and become a hub of surf culture along the way.
Of course, HB is much more than just a pier, but both the south side and north side have cultures all their own and unique regulars in each lineup that make it so colorful. Pros surf here. Beginners surf here. And groms that are probably better than you and I surf here. It’s a true melting pot, so I turned to Brett Simpson, Teddy Navarro, and Brian Bott to get some insight on everything from the crowds to the mechanics of the waves at the pier.
