You know you’re growing up when you let getting sick keep you out of the water. Here we are, the final official week of summer in the States, and yours truly spent it trolling the internet for a good mind-surfing fix. And I’m not one for high performance edits with three minutes of air reverses. As much as I appreciate them, there’s somethign to be said for those clips that are little more artsy fartsy. I spent my week keeping tabs on the surf world from a laptop on my kitchen table rather than out in the ocean itself. Here are a couple gems I came across:
Video of the Week:
This is an oldie and an awesome find buried in the internet. It sounds silly, but I was fascinated by it. I’m not dumb enough to think Kelly Slater is impervious to depression or just flat out being bummed from time to time, but it’s still a nice little reality check and piece of perspective. The fact is, many of us say we’d trade places with the 11-time world champ in a heartbeat. He’s seen and done it all. He’s accomplished things that transcend surfing, dabbled in everything from Hollywood to fashion, and he can attest to the fact that those things don’t just magically make you happy. Kelly’s incredibly candid in this interview, another checkpoint on the very long list of reasons we love him.
From The Tour:
Lowers is starting off with head high surf? You do realize any Southern California surfer is more excited about the barrels that will bring them and not whether or not the top-34 scores at Trestles, right?
On the womens’ side, I expect Carissa to jump back in the driver’s seat by the end of this one. She rocks at Lowers and I imagine spending an entire month out of competition after relinquishing her lead to Courtney Conlogue at the US Open has Moore antsy right now. You know who else you should watch out for, though? Lakey Peterson hasn’t finished lower than 5th all year. The only other surfer to do that is the woman in charge at the moment, Conlogue. At some point, Lakey’s going to catch a hot streak, I think she’s due. So I’m calling for a battle between Carissa Moore and Lakey Peterson in the final of the Swatch Women’s Pro. Not that I’ll notice, though, if there are still waves leftover in SoCal…or if I ever kick this cold.
