Northern Europe may be the last place you’d expect to find surf. And yet, for those hungry enough, the wind whipped fickle lineups of the Danish island of Bornholm can yield promise. If you know where to look, that is.
Meet Dennie Hilding. Seven years ago, he and his family uprooted themselves from a comfortable life in Sweden to unplug from the demands of the digital age and reconnect with the land. For that, they chose to live on a farm on Bornholm – a 227 square mile rock that sits exposed to the elements in the notoriously turbulent Baltic Sea.
Since relocating, Dennie has doggedly searched for surf around the island and learned the ins and outs of forecasting. He reckons he’s the only surfer on the island.
