The Inertia

Over the weekend, 22-year-old Ricardo Andrés González Murillo, or “Richie,” went for a surf off the coastal area of Caldera in Costa Rica. When he never came home, his family began to worry. Days after his disappearance, Ricardo’s body was found by the Costa Rican Coast Guard nearly nine miles south of where he went missing, reports the Tico Times.

It was believed that Richie went under and never came up while surfing during the recent string of south swells in the area. After his disappearance, authorities had been scanning the coastline to sun up to sun down every day.

But due to the large swell and currents, it took the team four days, not until Tuesday afternoon, to find the body. He had washed a total of 13 kilometers south, off the town of Tivives. Initially the body was found by a boat occupied by González’s family; they kept it close until officials arrived to pull him out of the water.

Caldera is in the central part of Costa Rica, north of Jaco but south of Tamarindo. It’s a shipping city that is mainly a local area, though tourists do come into the port via cruise ships. The surf spot at Caldera is the Jetty, which breaks as a left. But on the other side is a beachbreak.

Our thoughts and prayers go out to Richie’s family and friends.
