Contrary to popular belief, much of California isn’t exactly a surfer’s paradise. Sure, when waves show up, they can be world-class, but all too often it’s a little lackluster. With the right mindset, however, a lack of waves doesn’t have to mean a lack of fun. Enter Blair Conklin.
His hometown of Laguna Beach might not be a surfer’s paradise, but it sure does lend itself to skimboarding. Conklin, a world champion, became one of the best in the world, and that meant a LOT of time at the beach. “The beach to me,” he says, “is a place where I feel relaxed and at ease. It feels like home to me. All of the best experiences in my lifetime have been related to being at the beach or in the ocean.”
