Well, the first WSL event of 2023 is done and dusted. The Billabong Pro Pipeline didn’t have the best waves anyone’s ever seen, but such is the nature of a surf contest, right? Still, though, there were a few moments that really stood out. John John was back, finally at full health, as was Gabriel Medina. Jack Robinson and Carissa Moore won the event, but they had to beat a stacked roster to do so. That stacked roster put up a handful of scores that were in the excellent range.
John John Florence, Gabriel Medina, Carissa Moore, Tyler Wright, Caio Ibelli, Molly Picklum, João Chianca, and Jordy Smith, all made the World Surf League’s short super cut of “excellent waves.” The next event is Sunset, so keep an eye on the conditions at WorldSurfLeague.com.
