Big-wave charger Keali’i Mamala has been arrested and charged with multiple serious offenses. According to Hawaii News Now, Hawaii County prosecutors said Mamala had been restraining a household member since November of last year. A Hawaii County Prosecutors press release elaborated that the alleged offenses also included strangulation, causing a ruptured eardrum and broken nose and “causing bodily injury with a dangerous instrument.”

Mamala, 46, has been charged with 25 offenses in total, 14 in District Court and 11 in Circuit Court. The most serious of them, Unlawful Imprisonment in the First Degree, Assault in the Second Degree, and Felony Abuse, are class C felony offenses that carry a penalty of either a five-year prison term or five years probation and up to twelve months in jail.

Mamala is currently being held without bail in the Circuit Court matter and on $116,020.00 in the District Court matter.

Mamala was an invitee to the Eddie Aikau Big Wave Invitational in 2024 and 2023. He has also had multiple Ride of the Year entries into the Billabong XXL Big Wave awards, including 2013, 2014 and 2015.
