The Inertia

Bethany Hamilton is known for a lot of things. In addition to being a shark attack survivor and an incredible surfer, Hamilton is well known for being relatively soft spoken and incredibly kind. But when it came to the WSL’s announcement of their new transgender policy, Hamilton took to social media to share her thoughts and ask questions.

As we shared in a previous piece, the WSL is adopting the International Surfing Association’s policy. “The policy, which the ISA first released in October of 2022, requires athletes who are assigned male at birth to maintain a testosterone level less than 5 nmol/L (nanomoles per liter) continuously for the previous 12 months to be eligible to compete in a women’s event.”

Hamilton’s purpose in the post was not to be rude or mean, it seemed, but simply to express her thoughts. She fears some may be afraid to speak up regarding the matter, so she took the opportunity to do so. Hamilton states that in her opinion, the most fair solution would be to have a different division so everyone would have an equal opportunity to showcase their talent.
