On the east coast of Australia, it’s all about sand. Ocean currents swiftly move the sand from point A to point B, subsequently changing the ocean floor and thus creating (or destroying) good waves. With numerous headlands, points, open beaches and reef breaks abound, the coast enjoys some of the most celebrated surf spots in the world. While crowds can reach outlandish numbers at the more consistent and accessible waves, the sheer length of the coastline leaves the door wide open for exploration and hunting of empty perfection. When sand accumulates at the right place and time, certain beaches come alive and knowing where to be is essential.
Asher Pacey understands ocean swells, wind, tide and sand bars as well as anyone. His thirst for tube time and adventurous spirit have taken him to far corners of the globe as well as up and down the coast he calls home. As far as being in the right place at the right time goes, Asher has got it down.
During the making of WAY OF THE OCEAN, I spent two years off and on traveling up and down the east coast of Australia with Asher scoring incredible waves at out of the way locations. In this episode of BESIDES, he shows us what you can find when the sand settles at the right places and the conditions all come together. It was pretty special to film most of of these sessions with not one other person in the water. Theres a certain calm you feel with solitude, when you combine that with pumping surf and beautiful scenery its hard to describe with words.
