Ben Gravy has surfed basically everything, from ferry waves, to calving glaciers, to a man-made break he MacGyvered together using a truck and a piece of plywood. However, despite having surfed basically everything that’s even remotely surfable in the United States, Gravy just made his first trip to mainland Mexico.
After a journey that involved a pre-dawn wakeup and three connecting flights, the crew finally arrived in country. For the first third of the video, the break itself remains shrouded in secrecy, described by Gravy as, “The best right-hand point break in the world… question mark?”
Finally, the veil is lifted, and we learn they’re going to Punta Escondida. On their first excursion to the ocean, the waves turn out to be a little less explosive than their descriptions on the trip over, but if anyone can make a dollar out of a dime, it’s Ben Gravy.
Undeterred, they head over to a few more nearby breaks to try their luck, to varying degrees of success. At the end of the day, Ben emerges with some of his trademark optimism: “Just scored some really, really good waves. I know to a lot of people that’s not amazing. But, to me, where I come from, a wave that peels for more than five seconds and keeps reforming, you can do multiple turns, that’s amazing.”
