The Inertia

Ben Gravy, as you know if you’re the vlog-following type, is in South Korea on a surf trip. Ben Gravy surfs a lot of novelty waves, so it’s not a surprise that he went far-afield in search of a new experience. It’s not the first place you might think of when you think “surf trip,” but perhaps that will change soon. The waves are good there, and the small pockets of surfing communities are tight-knit and friendly. There are wave pools inland and real waves outland, if you’ll allow us to make up a word.

If and when a typhoon whips itself into a frenzy off the coast and that frenzy angles itself just so, the waves there get good, to say the least — but like everything with surfing, “good” relies on a whole lot of factors, the most important of which is luck. And Ben was lucky.

“Visiting Korea in the fall, I was told we may end up scoring some pretty fun surf,” Ben said. “The luck of being in the right place at the right time for the swell of the season, a legit typhoon swell on the east coast of South Korea, is still something I’m surprised by. Either it happens all the time or I’m the luckiest man alive!?”
