The Inertia

Ben Gravy’s vlogs are usually pretty high energy and filled with a lot of laughs. This one’s a bit more sentimental as the Jersey surfer just accomplished a major personal feat: surfing all 50 States in the Union. And if Ben Gravy’s going to cross something big off his bucket list — something very few people on the planet will ever lay claim to – it’s only fitting that the final checkmark on his American waves list is as novel as they come. So he surfed an Alaskan tidal bore.

“If there’s anything that you need to know in this life, it’s that anything is possible,” he says. “And if you believe in yourself you can actually do anything.”

The bore runs through Turnagain Arm, a waterway in the northwestern part of the Gulf of Alaska and just like other bores around the world, it’s unique. Specifically, the Alaskan Bore is supposed to be one of the biggest in the world and the only one (that we know about) in the far north, running through mountains and making for a pretty scenic setting. Waves can get up to 10 feet, according to state officials, but Gravy didn’t exactly catch this on such a nuking day. Instead, he nabbed a long, fun, waist-high left and hooted the entire way back to land.

“As soon as I got going everything hit me, dude. Like all that f**king work. It’s crazy,” an emotional Gravy says after. “I’ve never worked so hard for something in my entire life and I f**king did it. Like, I really did it.”

Naturally, after he manages to fight back the tears he asks the same question the rest of us would: “Now what?”
