Ben Gravy has a healthy claim on the title of King of the Novelty Wave. His career has taken him surfing at not only every state in America, but to far-flung breaks around the world and even the seven seas. It’s also had him shredding behind a hell of a lot of ferries, as you can see in his latest video.
Man-made waves are typically intentional creations. Whether its the train-powered tube at Lemoore, or the air pressure-controlled breaks of one of the many Perfect Swell pools dotted across the world, most of them are carefully engineered to try to replicate the conditions at your favorite natural surf break.
Ferry waves, on the other hand, are more of a happy accident. They’re byproducts of the massive wakes created by the displacement ferry boat hulls. Basically, it’s wake surfing on a massive scale.
Ferries have attracted novelty surfers for some time now, including weird waves pioneer Dylan Graves. However, Ben Gravy may have logged more hours surfing behind a ferry than any other surfer out there. As a result, he’s got a lot of footage to draw on, which he put together for a supercut on his YouTube channel.
“I’ve been at this for awhile & through my process I’ve been lucky enough to capture and even surf some of the best ferry waves of all time,” wrote Gravy in the caption for his video. “I hope everyone is stoked to relive some epic times in the Ben Gravy vlogs history and maybe even see some of these for the first time. Thanks to everyone who’s ever supported me and what I do.”
