The latest video from Ben Gravy starts off with him trudging through the snow, shortboard in hand. It’s the most recent in a series of travelogues he’s posted from a trip to Iceland, and it’s possibly the most visually breathtaking one yet.
With glittering skies and snow-covered mountains in the background, Gravy went out for a session in surf that turned out to be not only easy on the eyes, but shockingly rippable – and not another person in sight. Of course, the price to be paid for those empty lineups was bitter cold. “Majestic session,” said Gravy afterwards. “[But] as soon as the sun creeps below the mountain over there, it gets frigid. And there was a lull at the end, so I was just out there just sitting, just waiting for the next dreamer.”
He also made a few unlikely friends on the way. A group of Italian surfers took Gravy and company in, providing him with some shelter, companionship, and some pretty spot-on Iceland travel advice. “This might be the most legendary travel hack of all time,” explained Gravy. “For 1,000 Icelandic Krone, after a surf session, you can stay in your wetsuit, go to this pool right here. They have a 36 degree pool (which is like 100 degrees) and they have hot showers and bathrooms. So you can come here and warm up. You don’t have to just get out of the water, get into the van and suffer. So this is amazing.”
