Sometimes, the journey to a surf break makes the wave that much better. Whether it’s a well-hidden local spot, or a far-flung destination that takes days to reach, there’s a sense of accomplishment from accessing a hard-to reach wave. Ben Gravy recently got a healthy dose of that satisfaction on an expedition to a remote wave in Iceland.
The moment was documented in the novelty wave hunter’s latest YouTube edit, where Gravy and crew braved a brutal 24-hour journey that culminated in snowy vistas and legitimately bombing waves.
However, the hazards weren’t limited to the effort of actually getting there, as Gravy nearly lost his board during the first session. “Heavy one,” Gravy gleefully explained to his camera, while holding up his leash. “This thing ripped off my ankle when I was on my way out there, and I was like, ‘That’s weird.’ (Then) it ripped off when I fell backwards. Lost my board into the rocks. We got away with murder, though. No dings, really. Fin box is intact. Looks like she’s gonna live to shred another day.”
Good thing it did, too, because the next day saw another shockingly rippable peak. “Gnarly travel,” said Gravy afterwards. “It was dark for like 18 hours, but this is a dream of mine that we fulfilled here this morning, made it to the world famous right-hand point in Iceland, and it was actually bombing.”
