We’re laughing with Ben Gravy on this one because we’ve all been there. Before he could pull his van out of the driveway to start his day, Gravy broke a camera lens by knocking it off a counter, forgot about a Zoom business call he’d scheduled, and then realized that the, “please get gas now” light on his dash is actually a precursor to when his vehicle stops running. Few things make you feel like a kook as much as letting your ride run out of gas.
“I’m having a terrible day,” he declared long before lunchtime.
Then he went out and did exactly what you would expect from a guy so obsessed with finding waves that he’s literally found one in all 50 states: he took an inflatable SUP and a quiver of foamies out into terrible, onshore slop and had the time of his life with two buddies.
“Life is not easy every day,” he says. “Some days flow really good, but other days you have a day like I did, where you feel like a total kook. You kinda feel just like a loser. Like you can’t do anything right.”
His answer to getting through those days?
“Go easy on yourself. Life doesn’t come down to one single moment, hour, day, or even one year. You can have a terrible year and you can turn it around the next year.”
Ben then shared a little bit about some rough times in his past. “Drunk every day of my life,” he said. “I made a decision one day and I changed it. And it hasn’t been perfect. It hasn’t been easy. But I’ve taken the small steps to get to where I am today.”
Leave it to good old Ben Gravy to turn a rainy, crappy day into a good one. Nobody’s perfect. We’re all kooks in the end anyway.
