The Inertia

A few days ago, Ben Gravy posted a quick video on his Instagram. The caption held no information other than “a Christmas anomaly.” Since the video showed a wildly strange wave — a running left-hander that rears up out of nowhere and runs for an incredibly long time — people were curious, to say the least.

At first, it would appear that Gravy had found yet another tidal bore. The wave certainly looks like one, but Ben decided to explain exactly what created the wave. “Life can be interesting,” he wrote. “A random positioning of a video camera and just the right amount of gas from a ferry boat can create an entirely new world… The general consensus was that I discovered an East Coast tidal bore. When I break down the science behind how this particular ferry wave actually breaks, it is in fact, like a tidal bore. All the water gets pulled off the bottom (low tide), then makes its way back into the shoreline (high tide). The gift that truly keeps on giving!”

The video, however, is nearly 40 minutes long, so it’ll take a while to find the wave in question. It will take 31 minutes, to be precise. You’re welcome.
