The Inertia

New Jersey experienced the swell of a lifetime. Just before Christmas, the state saw waves that many claim are the biggest they’ve ever seen in the region. From the footage and photos that came out of it, it’s hard to argue otherwise.

The conditions were so wild that New Jersey native Ben Gravy actually flew back home from Hawaii to experience it. Though things settled down slightly after the madness we saw on December 18th, Gravy’s latest video shows that there was still some incredible surf out there. “If you’ve been following along, you know that there’s been a full-blown swell bender here on the East Coast.” said Gravy, “Pretty much been putting in days.”

After an initial paddle-in session, it was time to break out the Jet Ski. Though it may have been a bit of overkill for the waves on hand, Gravy explained that it was most likely the final opportunity to use the craft before packing it up for the winter. The only problem was that he had to not only jump-start the battery, but also literally peel his frozen wetsuit off of the side of the craft. They finally did get the machine in the water, however, just in time to properly bid farewell to a swell that will go down in New Jersey surf history.
