Few things in life can be as fulfilling as staying on the homefront and feeling like you’re on a surf trip. It’s one of the greatest gifts that come with those rare, all-time swells hitting your neighborhood.
Ben Gravy got a little dose of that with a twist recently — he really was on a trip. Never one to miss a chance for waves wherever he is, Gravy was on the road over the weekend when he caught notice of something in the works. He plotted a road mission back to New Jersey expecting conditions to line up perfectly back home, calling for a pre-dawn wake up call and a couple hundred miles worth of driving from Pennsylvania, where he was at. By the time he made his way back to the Garden State Monday morning some of the best waves he’d ever seen there were waiting.
“I literally just caught the absolute wave of my life in New Jersey,” he says back on the beach. “We were just freaking out, laughing like hyenas.”
Gravy’s calling it the biggest he’s ever seen in Jersey and claims at least one 15-foot face, courtesy of winter storm Izzy. It’s not an exaggerated claim.
“I don’t care what anyone else says. That was a freaking bomb.“
