The Inertia

On October 29, Hurricane Epsilon sent huge waves all across the Atlantic. Portugal was huge and Scotland, too. On the other side of the pond, the U.S. East Coast was slammed with giant, messy surf. And France’s big wave jewel, Belharra, went off.

Belharra isn’t a wave you hear about all that often. Three kilometers from the coast, it requires a particularly deep low-pressure system to create waves big enough for it to be impressive, but the outside reef saw some of the biggest waves of the late fall. Camille Le Saux directed the short film you see above for Surf Report. They followed French surfers Rémi Arauzo and Léo Havion in the wee hours of the morning and into the breaking of a day that would be seared into their collective memories.
