The Inertia

Lower Trestles is Southern California’s thunderdome. Equal parts surfing heaven and lineup hell, memorialized by the words “The Surf Is Good but the Crowd Isn’t,” scrawled on one of the paths to the beach in wax. It’s a testament to how incredibly good a wave it is that people will consistently brave lineups packed with locals, bros, snakes and the occasional pro, just for a shot at a ride.

However, surfers like Barron Mamiya rise above the fray, in this case quite literally. In a clip posted to OutraCultura’s YouTube channel, filmed and edited by Alexandre Morelli, Barron effortlessly glides through the notorious lineup before taking to the skies above it. Between his raw skill and the magic of editing, Mamiya takes advantage of the true potential of Trestles in a way that most can’t.
