Male surfers planning an expedition to the frigid waters off Denmark’s west coast might want to bring a little more protection than just a 6/5/4 hooded wetsuit and booties.
Earlier this week, CNN reported that a fisherman working in the Oresund Strait, between Denmark and Sweden, found a Pacu fish – or as it’s more affectionately called – the “ball cutter” – named for the fact that it has eaten human testicles. A native of South America, the Pacu fish is a close relative of the infamous piranha and features a mouth full of human-like teeth that are perfectly built for crushing their food of choice: nuts. And, yes, they have eaten human testicles. Scientists believe that the handful of documented testicle-eating incidents involving Pacu fish have been a case of mistaken identity with the fish confusing an important part of the human male anatomy with their favorite snack.
Seriously, Shark Week and now this? I might never go surfing again! Despite what many scientists are saying is an “overreaction” to the discovery of this manhood-eater in Scandinavia, the fact remains that at least two deaths have been attributed to this aquatic castrator. Oh, and they can grow up to 55 pounds in the wild which basically equates to a scrotum slashing fish-torpedo heading straight for your crotch. Experts are unsure of exactly how a Pacu fish ended up in Danish waters, but fishermen in South America are surely glad to have one less thief scheming after their family jewels.
