Keramas is a one in a million wave. Located on Bali’s east coast in Gianyar, the surf break is known less for its size than for just how perfectly shaped the wave can be. On the other hand, it can also go absolutely mental under the right conditions. However, a new development proposal has some locals worried about the wave’s future.
The potential threat comes in the form of a proposed floating restaurant and marina, according to the Bali Sun. On December 15, a development plan for the site was revealed at an event held by the Keramas Village Government at the Wantilan Pura Keramas Village. There, local stakeholders discussed the proposal.
Among the plan’s opponents were the owners of Komune Resort Gianyar, who have reportedly filed a formal objection to the project. The resort released a statement, saying “Keramas is known as one of the best surfing locations in the world and has hosted three World Surf League events. This marina will permanently destroy the surf break, resulting in the loss of thousands of tourists each year and a devastating impact on the surfing industry in Bali.”
Additionally, they expressed concern for Pura Masceti, a local Hindu temple that is considered a sacred site. They added, “This marina could threaten the cultural and spiritual heritage of Keramas, which has long been revered by the local community.”
