The Inertia

Yet another surfer has gone missing due to a suspected shark attack in Australia. This incident took place at Wharton Beach, roughly 500 miles southeast of Perth, where a surfer was seen in distress on Monday.

As ABC News Australia reports, the surfer was 37-year-old Steven Jeffrey Payne of Melbourne. After the authorities were called, his board was found floating in the water, bearing the evidence of bite marks.

Though Payne’s body has not yet been recovered, Senior Sergeant Christopher Taylor told ABC that it was clear he was the victim of a shark attack. Police came to this conclusion after speaking to witnesses and reviewing drone footage from a member of the public. “There was a lot of blood, the shark, and some other things that I don’t think any others need to see,” he said.

Taylor added that the search may be called off Tuesday afternoon if the body was still not found. “I don’t think there’s much point in utilizing all the resources that we have at the moment too much longer,” he said. “There’s only so much of the bay you can keep searching over and over. ”
