A search is underway for a surfer who was attacked by a shark at Granites Beach on South Australia’s Eyre Peninsula. Emergency services were called to the location just after 7pm on Thursday, following reports of a surfer being taken by a shark, as ABC News reports.

“A search is currently underway for the person,” said South Australia Police in a statement. South Australia Police and State Emergency Services searched the water for several hours on Thursday and announced they would resume the search at first light on Friday morning. Police closed the beach and asked that people avoid the area for the time being.

Granites is the same beach where 55-year-old surfer Tod Gendle was attacked in 2023. According to a witness, “(The shark) grabbed him, pulled him back down, brought him back up, pulled him back down again.” Shortly after, a local surfer who went out on a jet ski to look for Gendle was circled by a four meter long shark.
