The Inertia

Earlier this week, a massive storm slammed the east coast of Australia. Beaches closed, flights were canceled. It was chaos. However, the cataclysmic conditions proved to be a blessing in disguise for Coogee’s surfing population, as along with the storm came an equally massive swell.

According to Tim Bonython, a surfing cinematographer based out of Sydney, it actually may have been historic. ”Locals informed me that this swell is the biggest in decades.” He wrote on his YouTube channel, Surfing Visions “One Coogee local told me that there hasn’t been a swell bigger since the one way back in 1974.”

“While most of Sydney’s breaks were washed and blown out, Wedding Cake was the place to be once the sun came up,” wrote Sam Morgan of Tracks, “The surf spot rarely breaks, maybe once or twice a year. Those daring enough would take on the 15-20 foot waves that marched towards the rocky outcrop off Coogee.”

And we’re glad they did, because the footage we’ve seen is appropriately epic. Here is another offering, this time in glorious 4k.
