The Inertia

Last year, I found myself in some amazing places with my cameras. It was September of 2013 when I first flew a German friend’s drone. After flying it for roughly four minutes, I ran straight back to my dorm in Fiji to  throw down $2000 and get one asap. I knew this was a game changer–for better or worse, I wasn’t sure–but I wanted in. It started as a fun hobby just taking some pics with the GoPro to get some fresh angles around home, then turned into a full on addiction. Technology is changing so fast that I’m probably at about 12 grand on drones now… and about to buy the next best one. It’s just so fun!

I travelled all year in 2014 working as a still shooter, but I always had my drone right next to me. While you’re not technically allowed to work commercially with a drone until you’re licensed, you can fly for fun anytime. I was getting bored going through the normal formula of surf photography. I started to feel like an eagle with its wings clipped, so when i got home, I thought “bugger it, I’m going in head first.” Now I’m commercially licensed to drone. The monkey is off my back, my wings are unclipped… its on!

So here are some random moments from high above 2014. It certainly was a busy and fun year. Thanks to all the crew and talent that take me on these amazing adventures.
