The Inertia

When Uluwatu gets big, you can’t go out there expecting a casual day of surfing. You have to go out there expecting two things: first, because you’re not the pessimistic type, you’re expecting the wave of your life. Second, because you’re a realist, you’re expecting to get seriously beat down. If you have those two things in mind, you’re probably going to have an okay day because, at the very least, one of the two things will happen. On August 30, Uluwatu got big. And a number of surfers got both the waves of their lives and/or a serious beat down.

“The biggest swell of the year hit Bali yesterday, and we captured a pretty scary moment on one of the largest sets of the afternoon,” wrote Global Zoo on YouTube. “After an attempted rescue the ski driver was inches from disaster, but just managed to outrun the whitewater, albeit minus the passenger.”

The surfer, luckily, wasn’t in serious danger and he was rescued without incident after the set. The rest of the video is nearly 10 minutes of the Bombie doing its thing, Outside Corner doing its thing, and later on, Padang Padang doing its thing.
