The Inertia

Amid speculation the Drug Aware Margaret River Pro might be on the chopping block for next year’s tour schedule, ABC News Australia has confirmed the event will remain a tour stop for at least the next two years.

Rumblings abound surrounding the WSL’s plans to cut down the number of tour stops as early as next year. Perhaps to make room for a ‘CT event at KS Wave Co.’s facility in Lemoore? As of yet, there’s been no official word from the WSL on this.

Whatever the specifics, back in March before this year’s event at Margaret River, Western Australia State Tourism Minister Paul Papalia expressed his concern that with three events in Australia, the Drug Aware Pro would get the shaft.

“As a State we contribute a hell of a lot more than competitors on the east coast, so there’s no logic to it, were they to shift it,” he said.

But Papalia recently confirmed a break in ongoing negotiations, ensuring the event would be renewed for the next two years.

Since its addition to the ‘CT schedule, the Drug Aware Pro has been a favorite among athletes and fans. This year’s historic move to firing North Point boasted some amazing waves. And the possibility to audible and run at The Box is a way to keep the event interesting. Earlier this year John John Florence who went on to win the event, told ABC, “It’s one of my favorite places to come to on the whole tour.”
