Wave Pool developer American Wave Machines announced it has agreed to develop a PerfectSwell surf resort in China. The partnership with China Tourism Group promises not only extensive tourist accommodations, but also a training ground for China’s push into competitive surfing.

The attraction is to be located on the island of Hainan in Riyue Bay, and appropriately named the Riyue Bay Surf Resort. Riyue Bay, also known as Sun and Moon Bay, is the heart of China’s local surfing scene and the home to China’s national surfing team.

The multi-use development will be the first surf resort in China. Beyond the AWM-supplied pool, the resort will also feature a surf-themed hotel, shopping center, bar and restaurants, surf retail shop and skatepark. A planned second phase of development will subsequently add more rooms to the hotel and further accommodation options.

In addition to the tourism potential for the resort, resort surf park director Kuan Zhao asserted that the new pool will also help fuel the country’s recent push into competitive surfing. “With the launch of PerfectSwell, China solidifies its commitment to developing world-class athletes across all Olympic sports, surfing included,” said Zhao in the press release. “With PerfectSwell, Riyue Bay Surf Resort delivers unparalleled training opportunities allowing us to cultivate homegrown talent. At the same time, the venue will deliver a world-class resort experience for all levels of surf tourists. We will expand the surfing community throughout the country while welcoming the diverse and broad spectrum of surf enthusiasts from around the world.”
