Over the weekend, the Nissan Super Girl Surf Pro touched down at the Oceanside Pier. The three-day event had, quite frankly, an intimidating amount of things to check out, from entire beach volleyball and skimboarding tournaments, to celebrity speakers, panel discussions on female leadership and sustainability, and a concert. However, the centerpiece of the weekend was an all-female surf competition that had an entry pool stacked with some of the best surfers in the world. Now, the results are in.
The final came down to Alyssa Spencer versus defending champion Sawyer Lindblad. Spencer put on a dominant performance throughout the competition, winning all of her heats and landing the highest scoring wave and heat in the Round of 32. In the end, that dominance carried her through the final, where she won with a score of 16.03, beating out Lindblad by 1.73 points.
Spencer has now won Super Girl Surf Pros on both coasts, having previously won the Jacksonville Super Girl Surf Pro. “I’ve had this event written down in my checklist of goals for a long time, pretty much since I started surfing. So, to win it feels amazing,” Spencer said of her result.
Spencer took home $8,000 in prize money, while Lindblad won $4,000 for second. Zoe Benadetto and Keala Tomoda-Bannert tied for third to round out the podium. Meanwhile, Summer Romero emerged victorious out of the entrants into the longboarding competition.
The win is of particular significance for Spencer, who has been competing in the Super Girl Surf Pro for years. As she said in a pre-finals interview, “This event is so special to me. I’ve been coming down here since I was a little girl, competing in it for like seven or eight years now, so it would be amazing to win here in Oceanside.”
