The Inertia

Editor’s Note: Our All-Time series showcases images that stop us in our tracks, from sessions we’d all like to have experienced. Only on rare occasions do nature’s infinite variables align. It’s even more unusual that photos capture the essence of that moment. If you’re sitting on an image (or two) from surf or snow that you think fits the description above and you’d like to be featured, shoot your photo with a few sentences about the day to info@theinertia.com

Yes, there is surf in the Mediterranean, and no, it’s not all mushy windswell. Well, it’s still windswell, but it certainly isn’t mushy. On January 25, Andrea Giana (@andreagianaphotography) caught some shots of spectacular surf going down in her home town of Varazze in the Liguria region of Italy. The best part? This isn’t all that rare of an occurrence.

“These perfect waves come very often in the winter, and give us the opportunity to see the sea in a different way,” Andrea told me. “Hard to believe it is not the Ocean! In Varazze there are many tourists who come from all over Europe to surf the spot. We in Varazze also have the first night lighthouse in all of Europe to surf at night at a spot called LA SECCA.” (Check out the last image in the gallery, or watch this.)

Don’t get hung up on the fact that much of the area’s swell comes from wind. There’s plenty of surf in the region, some that has even been compared to California’s oldest surf park, Lower Trestles.
