Well, the first-ever WSL Rip Curl Rottnest Search event is done and dusted. The results are in the books, the jerseys are hanging up to dry, and the competitors are resting their aching shoulders. Sally Fitzgibbons and Gabriel Medina walked away victorious.
It was, overall, a successful event. The waves were there, the surfing was on-point, and everything ran relatively smoothly. Which, in the current climate of surf contests, is saying a lot. The event had it all. Sally Fitzgibbons returned to form, World Champions battled it out, and rookie Morgan Cibilic made it all the way to the final. That was something he didn’t expect at all.
“This feels unbelievable, to be honest,” Cibilic said. “I’ve come into theses last couple of events with a lot of confidence. A final hasn’t felt too out of reach, but I guess if you asked me last year if I’d get a quarter-final, a semi-final, and a final finish from the four Australian events, I would have told you that you were tripping.”
So, now that it’s all said and done, the only thing left to do is sit back and watch the highlight reel. The World Surf League kindly stitched one together for all to see. Enjoy the highlights from Rottnest Island.
