When Hollywood does surfing, it’s generally a disaster. Sure, there’s the occasional hit, but that’s not on purpose–they turn into cult classics because they’re just so bad they’re GREAT. North Shore falls in that category. It is, without a doubt, the most-quoted surf movie out there. Chances are very high that you’ve heard most of the lines in the clip you see above (with the very notable exception of “nobody listens to Turtle”), courtesy of Devon Howard’s Instagram. Here’s what he had to say about the film:
“Around this same time 30 years ago, I went with my younger brother Bret to the University Town Center theater to watch the debut of “North Shore” (story of an Arizona wave pool surfer that enters the Pipe Masters on Oahu)… We knew in some ways it was bad but we didn’t care, we dug it instantly. I mean, Gerry Lopez’s character Vince was a total badass in a classy way. Occy and Paigey were modern day heroes already and 80s vibes were peaking. Rick and Chandler were stilted but Turtle made the movie an Overnight cult classic. We rented it countless times from our local Shop Video Biz and eventually got our own VHS copy. Knew every line to it. Later on, we’d meet geeks like us and go tit for tat on the quotes. Uber nerds knew that the most random non-scene was “go get it Roger! Yeah! … Yeah.” … still cracks me up to this day. “Scrub it kook” was a fav of Bret’s, still used to this day:) …. @toddglaser said they’re trying for a sequel… I hope not, you can’t ever top this. So bad, it’s amazing!”
