The Inertia

Tidal bores are strange things. They happen all over the world, from China to Alaska. In short, when a very large tide flows up a river heading out to the ocean, a wave is created. Some are much larger than others–this one, for example–but one thing is for sure. While the actual wave itself might not always be amazing, the sense of camaraderie among those who surf them is strong.

Up Alaska’s Turnagain Arm, a bore tide of unusual strength brought surfers, paddleboarders, and spectators out to see Mother Nature’s power.
