Despite what everyone says, pro surfing would have its drawbacks. Anyone who’s traveled for longer than six weeks knows it can wear on a person. Even if you’re traveling to places with perfect waves and getting paid to do it… at some point, it starts to feel like a job. Add that to constantly being in the public’s all-seeing eye, and you’ve got a recipe for a life that ain’t exactly what it’s made out to be.
“It’s fun to just not care, it almost takes you away from the reality of social media and everybody critiquing you,” Alana Blanchard says at the beginning of the latest Rip Curl installment. “Just not having expectations on anything.”
And she’s right. Expectations–whether they’re from work, relationships, or anything else in life–can be exhausting. They are, however, part of life. But it’s so nice to switch it all off. One of the best ways to do that is travel, and although it’s a cliché, the whole “not about the destination” bit rings true.
“When you expect nothing, you get everything,” says Tyler Wright. “If you keep an open mind, you can find anything. The search is never ending.”
