You freaking suck. We all do — about twice a day, given that Americans use an absurd 500 million plastic straws every day. And we don’t need to mention where way too many of those straws end up. Or the sea creatures who can suffer because of them. Or that our oceans are basically turning to plastic.
Adrian Grenier, also known as Vincent Chase from “Entourage,” also known as that dude with the dreamy eyes from “Entourage,” has a pretty compelling plan for how to stop so much sucking.
Last week, Grenier launched a campaign called Strawless Ocean, marked by the Twitter hashtag #StopSucking to encourage bars and restaurants to use straws made of paper, metal, glass, bamboo or reeds, rather than single-use plastic.
It also doesn’t hurt that the promotional video, which is pretty funny, features the likes of De La Soul, Brooklyn Decker, Adrian Grenier, The Skins, Neil deGrasse Tyson, and Radkey.
“While plastic straws may seem trivial in the grand scheme of the plastic pollution problem, we are viewing straws as our ‘gateway plastic’ for both consumers and industry leaders alike to understand and take action against all single-use plastics,” Grenier told Forbes.
The goal of the campaign is to prevent 500 million plastic straws out of the ocean in 2017 — enough to fill a garbage truck every day of the year. The #StopSucking campaign is part of Grenier’s the Lonely Whale Foundation, which takes of ocean noise, acidification, and overfishing in addition to plastic pollution.
Here’s some of the social media around the Twitter hashtag #StopSucking:
