Adam “Biff” D’Esposito, a 39-year-old brother, son, father, friend, and surfer was found dead in Mexico on September 9. In the wake of his death, his family has started a crowdfunding campaign to create a scholarship for his daughter and to help with expenses.
The circumstances of D’Esposito’s last known sighting are scary, sad, and confusing. Recently diagnosed with bipolar disorder, according to reports “he was last seen in Rosarito in bad condition on September 8 soaking wet in clothes, barefoot and scared.”
In the following weeks, his family and friends searched desperately for him, unaware that he was lying in a morgue in Rosarito. Major news outlets covered his disappearance. Kelly Slater posted about it on his Instagram. Sadly, however, Mexican authorities were able to identify a body they’d found as D’Esposito’s. The cause of death has been listed as drowning.
“As much as we all hoped and prayed for a different outcome, God had another plan. We now have to face the unimaginable realities of the next steps,” the crowdfunding campaign reads. “We are setting up a GoFundMe page to help the D’Esposito Family get through this incredibly trying and emotional time. The contributions from this page will be dedicated to helping this beautiful family move forward and help take care of Adam’s little girl, Annabella, who is 6 years old.”
The donations will be used to get Adam back to the States, for his memorial service, to fly Adam’s daughter, Annabella, and his girlfriend to California, and to set up a scholarship for Annabella.
With a goal of $35,000, as of September 28th, the campaign has raised nearly $8,000—and with any luck, the full goal will be reached. If nothing else, it will be one less thing for a family that is going through an immense tragedy to worry about.
