It’s been an incredible run of waves at Teahupoʻo over the last week. People like Kauli Vaast and Matahi Drollet have caught the waves of their lives. We get plenty of footage from the channel, where all the boats sit watching as brave surfers are shot out of mutant-like caverns. But rarely do we get to see the whole setup from above.
Notice the lineup of surfers in this drone footage, the boats, and how the wave bends, which shows just how important wave choice is here. Choose the wrong wave and it’ll bend around the reef like a hook, making escape impossible as the wave closes out and sends the unaware onto the shallow reef.
