Surf is not the first thing that springs to mind when one thinks about the Mediterranean Sea. Its rich culture and gastronomic heritage along with its pristine beaches makes for an idyllic setting.
Being a surfer and a photographer here on Spain’s eastern coast, one must have patience in order to withstand long flat spells. However, during the winter months, swells originating from the French Mediterranean coast make their way down to the province of Valencia.
Due to the lack of frequency in the swells, one must drop everything in order to search for waves, often leaving angry girlfriends/bosses in the process.
Swells rarely last for more than one or two days. It is normally onshore. The swell period rarely goes above twelve seconds. But the catch is that there are no tides. When conditions are good, they are good for the whole day. This area boasts of 300 days of sun per year, making the surf much more enjoyable.
