The Inertia

There’s a really good surf contest that you – if you aren’t already – should be aware of. It’s called The Perfect Chapter, and it’s really good for a few reasons.

First, the waiting period is months long, which lets organizers pick and choose from a whole lot of days. Second, the entire event runs over the course of a single day, which means that single day can be extraordinarily good. Third, it’s invite only, so the best of the best are there for that single day. Fourth, it’s basically a barrel-riding contest, which is the end all, be all of riding waves. Fifth, the organizers are devoted to running it on the “best day of the Portuguese winter” — which, because of the long waiting period, they can do. And sixth, the Perfect Chapter is a roving event, having been held at Carcavelos Beach in Cascais, Supertubos, and Nazaré. Because variety is the spice of life, right?

This year, it was held at Carcavelos, a fickle place that offers some of the best tubes on Earth when it’s working. Nic von Rupp won for the third time. The day was one to remember, as these days usually are. And the highlight reel? Well, the highlight reel is just bonkers.
