It is intriguing to me how even your favorite spot can change in a short period of time. In our case, the last big swells that have come through, have completely changed or rearranged some of the sandbars and beach breaks. What used to feel familiar, feels new again. I believe there is some magic in that: the ocean naturally keeps us on our toes.
As some of you might already know, Guatemala is known for its colorful culture, textiles, landscapes, and traditions. That being said, our own little surf culture does not fall far behind. From point breaks that seem like wave making machines to beach breaks that change and evolve alongside its people. Every surf trip is filled with a childlike joy — maybe it’s because it’s a new spot you hadn’t been to before, or perhaps because it’s your favorite spot.
Surfing is about being in the moment and being thankful for it. It’s about having and sharing good vibes so we can all enjoy as a whole, not only as individuals. It’s about knowing where you stand and working hard to get to where you want to go. It’s about exploring places you never even knew or dreamt of… you never know what you’re missing until you open your eyes to new experiences.
Also, I find it to be one of the most spiritual (not necessarily religious) experiences ever. There aren’t many places in our day-to-day world where we can truly be alone with ourselves. We do need a little calm and serenity from time to time, to be able to think and contemplate. Exploring within can be extremely rewarding as well as exploring the world. And then surfing also teaches you to share when there are others around, it teaches you to be brave when it becomes demanding, it teaches you to know yourself and your limits, it teaches you to to always go for what you want. And last but definitely not least, it teaches you to have respect, for the sea, nature and others.
I’d like to share this short gallery of 15 images that have a special meaning or feel to me. The include some of my favorite spots to shoot, and I would love for the world to see the beauty and purity that can be found in this waistland (I called it that since it looks like Guatemala is the continent’s waistline). Hope you enjoy the Guatemalan mermaid’s view.
